Martian-like landscapes. Cloud-meets-the-Earth pastures. The most stunning sunsets. The island of Maui in Hawaii is literally out-of-this world beautiful.
But not without its challenges.
We had planned Nathan and April’s engagement session in Maui for months. Since we live in Atlanta and they in Vancouver, all the planning was done long-distance via e-mails and Facetime. However, no amount of research and planning could prepare us for the adventure that we ended up having on the day of the session.
Fog and rain met us on the summit of the Haleakala Crater – not to mention the biting cold weather that made it almost impossible for Nathan and April to pose without getting drenched… or shivering from the cold. The landscape was so interesting with red soil and dry rocks for miles as though it’s Planet Mars. But the rain started to pour even harder and we had no choice but to cut the photoshoot short.
Disappointed, we slowly made our way back down.
But as we got closer to the foot of Haleakala, we were met by extremely contrasting landscapes than the Martian-like summit. This time, it was the best representation of Planet Earth – lush, evergreen, full of life. Heaven meets Earth as clouds literally touched the grounds. Any disappointments from earlier dissipated immediately as we were clicking away…
And then the finale.
We were worried that all the clouds would hide away the legendary Maui golden sunsets. But after a few minutes on the beach, the clouds parted and made way for the golden sun to peek through. People say that the best sunshine happens after the rain… and, given the GLOW on Nathan and April’s faces, we could not agree more.
