Why wait until Thanksgiving to give thanks?

This is the question we want to marinade on this week as we welcome Thanksgiving. There are so much that we can be thankful for even in the slightest details of our everyday, seemingly mundane, lives. We could be thankful for apple cider or hot chocolate especially this time of year. We could be thankful for the food that we have on the table every single day. We could be thankful for the roof above our heads. We could be thankful for traffic lights that bring order and safety to the streets. We could even be thankful for the spare change we have in our pockets especially when desperate times call, e.g. paying for parking at a packed concert, or getting a cold soda after unintentionally biting a jalapeño pepper.

And that is exactly what happened at this session with Ika and Sensen. Some, if not most, of the things you will see below were spontaneous and unplanned. We did not know that the ambience, props, and weather were on our side and they gave us extra creativity and easy-access into our work. When we arrived in Savannah, we were so hungry that we picked a random Thai restaurant. Little did we know that the location for the first shoot was within 3 blocks of where we parked. We wanted to capture the essence of the city, namely Southern architecture and moss trees, and were able to get all those in under an hour.

Ika especially bought a traditional yellow Chinese dress with a modern twist (courtesy of Heritsy) for this shoot to show some brightness to her character. Couple hours into the session, we came across a yellow buggy parked outside a retro SCAD studio. Serendipity? Yup! The lovebirds also wanted to shoot with a red yacht as a background, and that was the other reason why we drove all the way to Savannah. When we got to the pier, the boat unfortunately had already folded its sail. Luckily, there was a much bigger boat in white next to it and it was positioned more strategically with the River Street in the background. We felt like we were in Venice :)

The session at the beach was equally beautiful. We couldn’t catch the sunrise for the golden hour because the forecast was foggy with a chance of rain. So as we were driving to Tybee Island, we were discouraged by the fog and low visibility. When we reached the beach and started taking pictures, we were blown away by the results since the fog created an ethereal and heavenly feel to it. Yet another surprise! Last but not least, 5 minutes after we wrapped the session and drove away, it started to rain.

The bottom line is, if we were to see our glasses half empty, we could easily miss out on our blessings, especially those in disguise. In the wise words of Optimus Prime, there is always “more than meets the eye.”
