You don’t have to be a rocket scientist or a wise guru to know that sometimes things do not go according to plan. You’ve been wanting to attend your best friend’s wedding only to realize you just used up your last day off. You’ve burned the midnight oil to ace the finals but only got C+. Or maybe you had the answer to the question, “where do you see yourself 5 years from now? 10?”, but ended up at an entirely different place.
Carrie and CJ had the most beautiful wedding planned in tropical Vieques Island off of San Juan, Puerto Rico. As globetrotters, they picked the W Hotel at Vieques not only because of the breathtaking scenery and serene atmosphere but also because of the hospitality and customer service shown by the people working at the resort. By the way, CJ proposed to Carrie on one of their trips to the W at Vieques and was able to carry the perfect proposal with the help of the crew at the resort. Best seat in the house, rose petals, bottle of wine… the whole nine yard!
The morning of the wedding day, we were worried that it was going to rain. The fall months, especially September thru November, are typically considered as hurricane season in the Caribbean. The sun did peek through the gloominess a number of times that morning but unfortunately Murphy ’s Law prevailed this round. In an instant, everyone switched gears to “plan B” mode since time was not a luxury.
Though we were a tiny bit disappointed at first, CJ made a comment in his wedding vow that wholly shifted our paradigm. That morning, he knew that there was a high probability of rain. Even so, it did not change his joy of marrying his one and true soul mate. He knew both him and Carrie are a tremendously blessed couple. Family and close friends took time to attend, relax and “be” at their wedding weekend. They had the unique opportunity to talk, laugh and share around a bonfire with loved ones that entire weekend, not just 30 minutes that most couples have at their wedding (which usually ends up a blur). They got married at one of the best resorts on planet Earth and have an eternity to build a family with each other’s best friend. Oh, and don’t forget the Ah-mazing views of the island!
Carrie and CJ have taught us to look at the bright side. Interestingly enough, we were also reminded at church the other day that when we focus on the wrong thing, we lose sight of what God makes right. And that tempts us to take our focus and enjoyment away from the big picture.
Carrie and CJ, thank you again for entrusting us freeze-frame your big day. More than that, thank you for the friendship and reminding us of this valuable lesson. We have no doubt that you will have a blissful marriage ahead!
